El volcán Tungurahua es uno de los volcanes más activos de nuestro país, actualmente se encuentra en fase eruptiva de baja intensidad, el inicio dela actividad del Tungurahua como lo conocemos se remonta a finales del Pleistoceno o Pleistoceno Tardío, durante esta época el Tungurahua construyó un edificio volcánico con un diámetro de base de 14 Km. En una segunda fase hace por lo menos 14 mil años el Tungurahua creo un nuevo cono rápidamente hasta hace 2.995 años aproximadamente cuando sufrió un colapso lateral creando una avalancha estimada de 8 Km3.
En una tercera fase que se extiende hasta nuestros días, el cono del Tungurahua ha crecido hasta los 5.020 msnm. De estevolcán se recuerdan algunas erupciones, las últimas fueron entre los años 1916 - 1918.
