Esta impresionante imagen en color falso, muestra al volcán Chaitén expulsando una gruesa nube de gases y cenizas volcánicas, tan densa que oculta lo que hay bajo ella. En rojo se muestra la vegetación y los cultivos, en azul oscuro se muestran los cuerpos de agua, en verde se muestran los ríos y cuerpos de agua con ceniza y minerales disueltos llevados por el volcán, en celeste se aprecian los glaciares, en gris claro y marrón terrenos rocosos o con vegetación muerta, la nieve y la ceniza del volcán Chaitén se muestran en blanco.
Se puede apreciar en estas imágenes al río Blanco, el cual ha canalizado varios lahares del volcán que han sepultado parcialmente la localidad de Chaitén, aún visible en la imagen. La imagen fue lograda en enero 19 de este año por el Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) del satélite Terra de la NASA.
