El volcán Erta Ale es un volcán tipo escudo en continua actividad, el más activo de Etiopía actualmente. Este volcán se encuentra ubicado en la depresión Afar en Etiopía y tiene una altura de 613 metros, la planicie que lo rodea se encuentra por debajo del nivel del mar. Erta Ale posee dos cráteres activos dentro de los cuales existen lagos de lava en ebullición, ocasionalmente la lava es expelida por el flanco sur del edificio volcánico. Este tipo de volcanes son muy raros y presentan muy altas temperaturas.
El nombre Erta Ale significa "montaña humeante" en la lengua local Afar y el cráter del sur es denominado puerto al infierno". Este cráter fue recientemente cartografiado por un equipo de la BBC de Londres usando técnicas que involucran láser tridimensional, una técnica necesaria para medir un volcán con altas temperaturas.
