Peter Grunberg, de 68 años, galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Física 2007 junto con el francés Albert Fert, es un científico alemán cuyo descubrimiento de la magnetoresistencia gigante revolucionó los sectores de la información y la comunicación.
Grunberg nació el 18 de mayo de 1939 en Pilsen. Estudió en Francfort, antes de ingresar a la Universidad de Tecnología de Darmstadt, donde obtuvo su doctorado en 1969.
Luego ingresó al Departamento de Física Sólida del Centro de Investigación de Juelich (Renania del Norte, Westfalia).
En 1988 descubre el fenómeno de la magnetoresistencia gigante, independientemente de su colega francés Albert Fert.
Este mismo descubrimiento, aplicado a partir de 1997, le permitió recibir a principios de año, también en forma conjunta con Fert, el Premio Japón, uno de los galardones científicos más prestigiosos del mundo en la categoría "Realizaciones innovadoras inspiradas en investigaciones fundamentales".
Peter Grunberg, quien actualmente está jubilado, sigue trabajando para el Instituto de Juelich y continúa sus investigaciones en el sector en el cual fue recompensado con el Premio Nobel.
