El volcán Semeru, de 3.676 metros de altura, entró en erupción hacia la medianoche, cuando comenzó a expulsar por su cráter columnas de gases, humo y cenizas. El Observatorio de Vulcanología indicó que por ahora no habría ningún peligro para aquellas aldeas que se encuentran ubicadas cerca del monte Semeru.
El volcán esta situado al este de Java, y el pueblo más cercano se encuentra a diez kilómetros de distancia. En respuesta al aumento de su actividad, en mayo del 2008 ya habían elevado el nivel de alerta del volcán al tercer nivel de un máximo de cinco.
Indonesia forma parte del "Anillo de Fuego del Pacífico", una zona que, debido al choque de varias placas tectónicas, esta acostumbrada a mucha actividad volcánica y sísmica. Justamente, el archipiélago cuenta con 500 volcanes, de los cuales 129 permanecen activos.
