El Reventador es un volcán en la cordillera subandina, producto de fallas de cabalgamiento que permitieron el paso del magma hacia la superficie formando algunos volcanes como el Sumaco, Yanayacu y Pan de Azúcar. El Reventador actualmente es una caldera en forma de herradura orientada hacia el este, yaciendo sobre las ruinas de un cono volcánico anterior. El actual cono, antes simétrico y hoy dividido en dos, emerge sobre el centro de la caldera y presenta un pequeño cráter de 200-300 metros de diámetro.
